There is a lot of teaching and learning that can take place around the Superbowl, and Little Pot is excited to share some ways with you!

This activity will help students to learn math skills. They will be counting by tens, adding subtracting and multiplying. You will make up your own questions so you can adjust the activity to fit the level of the students you work with.

Lay out a piece of paper that looks like a football field. Have all the yards marked correctly on it. You can use this image and print it if that helps.

Then use little clay pots as the players. Each student will need to have their own Little Pot.

Begin to ask the student various math problems and have them position their Little Pot on the field to “show” you the answer.

For Example-

“Your little pot is on the 50 yard line. He moves 3 lines to the right. Each line is worth 10 yards. How many yards has it moved?”

ANSWER: 3 x 10 – 30. Little Pot has moved 30 yards.

“Since Little Pot started on the 50 yard line what yard line is it now on?”

ANSWER: 50-30=20. Little Pot is now on the 20 yard line.

Continue asking questions and evaluate to see if your student knows the answer and the math behind their answers.

Once your students understand how to move their little pots and work the problems by themselves, you can write moving directions on cards for students to draw. Then they can do the problems in the form on a game. If they end up in the end zone they score a touchdown. Each time a Little Pot gets a touchdown place a small manipulative inside that pot. Who ever has the most touchdowns and objects in their pot at the end of the game is the winner.

Obviously the game will be more fun after students have read The Little Pot. make sure you have a copy for your students to read before they play the game.

(My reflections after doing week 3 of the Breaking Free Bible Study by Beth Moore)

We have now finished the 3rd week of our study. The following is what I gained and how I’ve grown. I’m posting my thoughts here, simply to encourage you to do the same.

Week 3 is about removing obstacles in our life. Each day addresses a new obstacle.

Day 1 – The Obstacle of Unbelief – This day I began to realize that even though I know longer struggle with believing how real God is in my life, I do struggle with a belief in what He is doing with and through my life. Which for Him, I’m sure is one in the same. I have seen how I’ve grown in this area through the years, however. I remember when I struggled with believing his very existence and was way too afraid to admit that to any of my Godly friends. Through the years though I’ve seen HIm work in my life and do so many things that now I have no doubt how real He is. My unbelief now comes in when I fail to believe He will continue to do what He has promised. I begin to doubt, convincing myself that I misread Him, or misunderstood things. I get a sense of unbelief about my books or the ministry ahead of me when 2 months ago I stood confident – knowing what He called me to do. I saw how He only works through our faith andhow we limit Him becasue of this unbelief we carry around. I resolved again today to believe and prayed for God to help me through the unbelief I sometimes let settle in because things get harder than I would like.

Day 2 – The Obstacle of Pride Today God showed me how deep my own pride is rooted. This is another obstacle I’ve been trying to knock down for years. And it still seems to come back in my path again and again. Even within my suffering I become prideful at times. My books and ministry glorify God, I know that – but I have had to learn that I can’t share a God-glorifying life. God is God and He will not allow us to share 1st place with anything else but His glory. Even sharing our own fame. It is his fame, His glory – and no matter how successful Little Pot becomes – It has to be God’s.

Day 3 - The obstacle of Idolatry I loved discovering that dissatisfaction is in my life because God wants to fill those spaces. I have had so many jobs and been in so many places that I think I sometimes breed dissatisfaction. I am a work-aholic and have often made my job the most important thing in my life. It was very convicting to read Isa. 2:8 and realize that God refered to idols as the things man made with his hands. What else is my book except the thing I’ve made with my own hands. I vowed to God today to not let ever become an idol to me. That if I never get Tea Pot book finished or never sell another Little Pot book, that He will remain #1 in my life and nothing else will ever come before Him.

Day 4 - The Obstacle of Praylessness This lesson made me realize that I can spend too much time in a Bible Study and not enough in prayer. This obstacle keeps us from peace and on this day I had jsut gotten a rejection letter from another publisher. No matter how much I vow to not expect them to say yes. I hope and pray and when they don’t I am feeling so disappointed. I once again put my hope in the tangible and not in God. Prayer is about the intangible. I so need to learn to live my life more in the world of prayer. Bible study is not a substitute for prayer. It can actually become a tangible thing that gets in out way. Through prayer, I can have hope in my heart no matter what the circumstances bring, And continue to bear fruit. At the end of this lesson I got on my knees (literally) and prayed!

Day 5 – The Obstacle of Legalism Legalism is the rules that we are required to follow and live by for what others believe is our own good. We can become way too focused on the Do’s and Don’ts instead of just knowing and walking with God. Honoring God with our actions and not our hearts is never a good thing. This is the one thing I want to pass down to my children. WE as parents constantly teach right and wrong to our kids – but what is that except legalism. I so just want my kids to have a relationship with Christ for themselves. To walk with Him and serve HIm from their hearts. All the rest of the “do the right thing” then falls into place. So far my daughters are doing a a good job in getting to know their savior. And I get asked quite often how come they are such great girls. it isn’t because of what I’ve taught them to do or say – It is because they all 3 honor God with their hearts. I pray every day they continue down that path!

If you are doing this Bible study or have done it, I encourage you to share your thoughts below. If you haven’t – I recommend you do.

Frank is our guest blogger today -I enjoyed his article below.

When I talked about the idea of teaching according to God’s word in the last article, it was pointed out to me by a proof reader that I may have gotten ahead of myself. How? Before we can begin to teach subjects according to God’s word, our children need to see how important it is to us in a real way. How can this be done? First, do we actually use God’s Word coupled with our relationship with Him as the primary tool in making decisions in our lives? Is this consistent enough that our children see this is real to us?

This brings about the second way that our children can see that God’s Word is real. When we make a decision according to God’s Word, this often will bring an attack from the enemy in one form or another. Have our children been able to watch this process and see the victory that God brings in our lives? Look at Exodus 10:2. Moses is told to follow God through a series of attacks against His people by Pharaoh, but God says that this is an opportunity for their children to see God move. They are to then tell their children and grandchildren about these things.

Do you have a number of testimonies of God moving on your behalf because you obeyed Him? If our children have observed this over their young lives, any advice that we give to trust in the Lord will not ring hollow, but will really become an encouragement to them. This is the setting in which God speaks his command in Deuteronomy 6. It is that setting that prompts children to ask questions about God and the things of God. That is why it is important to have time for our children when these “teaching moments” occur.

Now, when we begin to talk with them concerning God’s view of science or history, they can believe what we tell them, because they have seen God move in our lives. When we tell them that God created the world in seven literal days, they understand. They have seen God work miracles for their parents. So the idea of God creating so much in such a short time is no big deal to them. If we show them that man and dinosaurs lived on the earth at the same time (Job 40:18 – 41:34), and we show them the scientific proof that the evolutionists have suppressed, they will believe the Word. They have watched you believe God’s word with clear results, so they know that God does what His Word says.

Now, let us take a look at a few more of the scientific facts in the Bible. For example, it is clear from history that as late as 1492 AD, most Europeans believed that the earth was flat. Columbus is credited with the final disproving of that “fact”. Did you know that the Bible stated that the world is round over 2,000 years earlier? Look at Isaiah 40:22. Some of the newer translations and transliterations change this verse so that it is politically correct. But the KJV, NKJV, NAS and NIV get it right. If you look at the second part of this verse, it says that God stretches out the heavens. Astronomers have recently discovered that the galaxies are constantly expanding outward!

In the Bible, there is no mention of rain until the flood. There are several mentions of dew and the “fountains of the deep”, which we know today to be underground springs and aquifers. Western Kansas lives off the aquifers, because there is insufficient water above the ground with which to grow crops. The Bible does not mention snow before the flood, nor does it mention deserts. Why? Many scientists now understand that there was a canopy around the earth, as the Bible describes. It gave the earth a constant temperature, protected us from UV rays, and made rain unnecessary. This canopy would also create a more dense oxygen content in the atmosphere. These conditions would promote a longer, healthier life and much quicker healing of the body. The Answers in Genesis web site has a lot of information on this subject.

If evolution is true, then Genesis is false. Since Jesus quotes extensively from Genesis, it has to be true. If God created the earth, as the Bible states, then it is easy to see that suffering and death did not occur until Adam and Eve sinned. However, evolution requires death from the beginning in order for the evolutionary process to occur. That contradicts the Bible. It also makes salvation impossible. How can God save us when He is powerless to create through supernatural means? How can He heal today if He is powerless to create through supernatural means? Armed with the Bible’s science facts, it becomes much easier to explain how walking in God’s righteousness will promote our spiritual and physical health and well being.

I think that we can begin to see how important it is to live our faith so that we can teach our children in a believable manner the love and power of God. The Bible says that in the last days, there will be many deceptions and false teachers. We are in those last days. It is time to start teaching our children in a way that counts – for all eternity. Maybe we can encourage now one another to spend more time in diligent study to learn what God has to say in the area of science.

Based on The Story of Ferdinand

by Munro Leaf, drawings by Robert Lawson

I chose this story for our “Fruit Bearing Book” today because I recently saw the movie, Blindside. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember the reference. If not, you should. -It is a great movie!

In the story, a bull named Ferdinand doesn’t really enjoy doing “bull things”. Instead, he likes smelling flowers and laying in the shade. He just isn’t a typical bull. When men come searching for the meanest and toughest bull, Ferdinand is stung by a bee. He jumps, kicks, and bucks at the pain. The men assume he is the meanest and therefore carry him off to the stadium to be in a bull fight. But Ferdinand remains calm and gentle.

I thin we can learn 2 main things from Ferdinand -

1. To be content.

I think we sometimes can become so discontented with our lives that we forget to appreciate all that God has done for us and given to us. We constantly ask God to do more in our lives and remain unsatisfied with all that He does do. John the Baptist warns people that they need to be contentwith what they have. (Luke 3:14) In Luke 15, we read the parable of the lost son. Ferdinand was not at all like either of the sons in this story. Both sons struggled with discontentment.

2. To be who you everywhere you go.

This quality in Ferdinand is what makes it easy for him to be content. Ferdinand knew what he liked and he was OK to be different. He didn’t let his circumstances change him. I think it could have been easy for a calm and gentle bull to turn into a raging, fighting bull given the circumstance that Ferdinand was put in. As Christians we often use our circumstances as an excuse to be less than Christlike.

God uses circumstances to put us into new situations. Ferdinand was able to show an entire stadium of people that bulls aren’t always mean and ferocious. Even though Ferdinand’s surroundings changed, he did not.

So the questions we must ask ourselves is #1 – are you content? – and if so, do you let circumstances affect your behavior and change who you are?

ACTIVITY:

-Have students write their own story by naming qualities about themselves. Then have them make up story where they are in a place or situation that those qualities would make it difficult for them to be there. Discuss with them how Ferdinand was brave to remain true to himself throughout the story. Let your students see that it takes a brave person to remain true to who they are in all circumstances.

-Ferdinand spent a lot of time alone smelling flowers and sitting under the tree. Invite students to have their own alone time too. We have to spend time alone to really know ourselves and to get to know God. Encourage students to enjoy being alone without video games or TV. Kids have a very difficult time doing that today.

-Research bullfighting and help students discover how that type of entertainment was what people enjoyed before video games.

-Have children act out the story. They’ll have fun pretending to be Ferdinand when he is stung by the bee. Just be careful they don’t kick each other.

We have now finished the 2nd week of our study. The following is what I gained and how I’ve grown. I’m posting my thoughts here, simply to encourage you to do the same.

Week 2 covers 5 Benefits that God plans for His children.

Day 1 – To Know and Believe God – The thing God dealt with most on this day was our relationship. I’ve spent years trying to get to know God better. And I do know HIm more than I use to – but I still try and work a one-sided relationship with Him. Those of you that know me, already know this about me. I can talk about myself easily. I am not afraid for people to know me. I have to work at taking time to know others though. And I have that same issue with God. I am great at dreaming up stuff I want to do and see happen. but a relationship takes both members dreaming and sharing and I have to make sure I am listening to God’s ideas as much as sharing with Him my own.

Day 2 – To Glorify God Does my reflect God’s Glory? yeah. That was the question I faced on Day 2. Captivity is the areas of life where God is not recognizable. So that made it pretty simple. I spent a long determining the areas of my life other people can’t recognize God in. And gave those to God, asking Him to better use me to glorify Him.

Day 3 - To Find Satisfaction in God I could just camp here on this one day for a year or more! Oh how I constantly look for satisfaction in everything else but God. And were talking about the richest of chocolate cake satisfaction. To where you can’t eat another bite! Do I get that kind of satisfaction from God? Most currently it is in the process of getting my books published. On this day I had a meeting scheduled with a new publisher. I prayed so hard for a book deal. The meeting went well and I set out to prove myself worthy of everything the publisher asked. I worked day and night telling myself that I would remain satisfied in Jesus alone if the book deal didn’t some. I kept hoping and praying and yesterday. The day before this writing this blog, I got the rejected letter. Disappointment set in, and fast. I knew I was relying once again on that for satisfaction. Now I am back on my knees asking for this benefit again.

Day 4 - To experience God’s Peace This lesson showed me how I have peace over the big issues in life , because I have no choice but to give those over to God. The other issues that I struggle with. I do so because I haven’t totally given those issues to God. I still think there is something about them that I need to do or fix. And that robs me of the peace I could have them. I also love how God uses a river to illustrate peace. I’ve always though of a smooth lake or pond as peaceful. But to God. peace is like a river. It is moving and flowing from a source. The source is God himself. Our life can twist and turn move fast and slow and the whole time remain peaceful.

Day 5 – To Enjoy God’s Presence God wanted me to know on this day that our relationship needs to be a lot more than just what He does for me and what I can be doing for Him. He just wants me to enjoy being with Him and knowing Him. the stuff can hinder God from being all He wants to be in my life. Just like stuff can hinder your relationship with your husband and children. God isn’t going to allow “stuff” to come between us. The real question is, What “stuff” am I allowing to come between the pure joy of a relationship with Him.

If you are doing this Bible study or have done it, I encourage you to share your thoughts below. If you haven’t – I recommend you do.

Based on Two Shoes by Beth Raitt

This is a great little, rhyming book with an obvious spiritual message woven in its pages. The two shoes look up to discover there is something bigger above them that is making them move and has control of their life. They discover feet, then shins, then knees, two thighs, two hips, a belly and so on. Until finally they hear a loud booming voice above. The voice explains that He is their creator and sent His son to save the world. The shoes then understand they have a purpose in their walk. . . “To love the lord Jesus and spread the good news”

I am sharing it today because it seems to fit something God has been dealing with me on.-Surrender and control. The topic keeps coming up in “my daily walk” -and I thought about these little shoes and how they keep wondering why they move and who is in control of them. It seems simple when it is put into the perspective of how our shoes would feel if they had feelings. I thought about how I look up to see a small piece of God and as I keep searching my perspective of Him gets bigger and bigger. The shoes in this story do the same. the biggest picture is understanding God’s love and gift of his son. Once we accept that, we have purpose. – But before that can ever happen we have to surrender ourselves to His control. There is a song out – “Let me be your hands, Let me be your feet” I’ve sung the song but was reminded of it as I read this little book. These two little shoes make a discovery that we all need to make. First by accepting that gift and then by remembering it as we allow God to daily control our walk.

So many great little activities come to mind with this story. The first thing that I think would be extremely fun is to have children select a pair of their shoes. It could be an old pair that they no longer wear. Then they could glue eyes on them and write a creative story about the places those shoes have been. I think it would be extremely fun to for them to write the story from their shoe’s perspective. Then you could make even more spiritual ties into how they responded to God at those very same adventures. The shoes in the story are anxious to a share the love of Jesus with others, and the children may be able to write about a time they shared Jesus’ love too. You could even set out a new adventure. Give them as assignment of somewhere to go. Something like a mission field trip and when they return they could write about the journey their shoes went on. Can’t you just see children walking around with googly eyes on their shoes.

by Beth Moore

I began this journey with several wonderful Godly woman at my church. Today we end the first week of the 10 week study. The following is what I gained and how I’ve grown. I’m posting my thoughts here, simply to encourage you to do the same.

Week 1 is called Untying the Cords of the Yoke. Each day we studied a different King.

Day 1 – was King Uzziah. – For me this day was God dealing with Pride. I saw how many of my problems are rooted in my own pride. Our pride interferes with who God is and stops Him form working in and through us. This was a very convicting day. I wasn’t sure I was ready to go on untying – but I did . . .

Day 2 was King Jotham. This day was a lot about having and loosing a hero in your life. I thought about my mom. She died when I was only 19 and she still remains my biggest hero. I also thought a lot about how my life has consisted of “hero-jobs” and not just “hero-people”. I’ve had jobs and careers in my life where I’ve used them to become my own hero. More than once, God has removed them so that I will remember to put Him in that place. I was reminded of the many times God changed my focus back to Him.

Day 3 was King Ahaz. This guy was bad news and I really hate to say I identify with him at all. I found it interesting that he was trapped by the very thing his father failed to remove. (”The high places”) It made me wonder if I was failing to remove anything from life that could one day cause my daughters to stumble in their faith. As a leader of any kind our responsibility is so great!

Day 4 was King Hezekiah. Here comes pride again. – King Hezekiah started out doing the right stuff. I love how Beth Moore said that “Sometimes faith is the absence of fear. Other times faith may be choosing to believe God even when your heart is melting with fear.” King Hezekiah thought he was going to die and God agreed to extend his life. Unfortunately, his pride returned. The question for me today was am I more afraid of humility or of pride? No one wants to be humbled. However, after reading this lesson I realized pride is so much more costly.

Day 5 was King Jesus. This is what it all comes down too. Our freedom is only available through Christ. On this day we are asked to evaluate what has kept us in bondage so that we are not free enough to live the abundant life God has for us. For me, I’ve had many – but the one that stood oust is my lack of patience and need to be in control. God has brought me through so many situations where I have had to remain patient and give control over to Him. It is an ongoing battle for me , but one that I am winning and continuing to break free from.

If you are doing this Bible study or have done it, I encourage you to share your thoughts below. If you haven’t – I recommend you do.

My post was going to be about a coloring book that I illustrated and designed through JAMSbooks Publishers with Doctors and mission teams from Operation Blessing. I’ve been so honored to be a part of this project and use my talents and God given gifts to help these people. The coloring book is a tool that will be used to teach the children and families about staying healthy. It instructs them about anti-parasites.

On the day after we signed the proof of it to be printed and shipped for the next trip to Haiti, a 7.3 earthquake devastated the area. I’ve spent the past month studying the people and culture so that I could accurately illustrate the book and seeing what is now taking place is all too close to me. One of the doctor’s involved in the project and who personally put up a lot of the funding to get it done is in Haiti right now. She is right there at the center of the devastation helping in every way she can.

What this means for the future of the coloring book, I have no idea, That seems a bit unimportant at this point – but one thing I do know, is that now all eyes are looking at Haiti. And as I studied that country this past month, I truly kept wondering how a country of people with so little could be so ignored by other countries of people with so much. It is my prayer and hope that this disaster will wake us up and cause us to share the many blessings we have been given. There is so much we can do. Please don’t sit back and think you have no way of helping these people. You do. The little you have is a fortune to them.

Miss Rumphius – doing something to make the world more beautiful.

Based on Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney

I love reading this book to student and listening to the many ideas they have about how to make our world more beautiful. If you are unfamiliar with it, It is about an elderly lady who shares with her neice the things she did throughout her life. She had set out to do three things in life. She planned to go to faraway places, live by the sea, and as her grandfather had told her, -to do something to make the world more beautiful.

She became a librarian and helped people find books. She went to a tropical island and climbed tall mountains. Everywher she went she made friends. Then she found a little house by the sea to live in. She knew there was still one more thing she needed to do to be happy, and that was to make the world a more beautiful place. She couldn’t decide what that would be until one day she saw some lupine flowers. She began to scatter lupine seeds everywhere. People thought she was crazy. But the next Spring there were lupines everywhere. And the lupines continued to spread and grow every year. Miss Rumphius became known as the Lupine Lady.

This is a great story to challenge children to think of the things they wish to do in their lifetime. I always challenged them to come up with three, just like Miss Rumphius. And, to make the third thing something that would make the world more beautiful.

Then we’d talk in greater detail about the lupines and how the seeds she planted continued to produce seeds year after year. It was always fun for them to see how the things they would do in life could continue to “produce” too.

This is a concept that God requires of us too. We all have to learn that our goals in life can’t be all about us. They have to include others. The Bible refers to love, joy, peace, patience, etc. as “fruit” – and the thing you learn about fruit is that within itself is the seeds that will produce more fruit. (Gal. 5:22) When we grow love, joy, peace, etc, we give it to someone else, – they may “consume it” but they are left with a seed inside to grow it again themselves.

I love how Miss Rumphius inspires us all to do something to make the world more beautiful, and I love how at the end of the book her niece isn’t quite sure how she will accomplish it, but still knows that someday she will.

For children, it is important that we get them thinking eternally. To identify how their actions reproduce more actions. That they will inspire others and that in itself is a way to make the world a more beautiful place.

A great activity with this books is to plant seeds and with each seed they plant, have them something that they want to re-produce in others. Some will be stuck on the literal and say “flowers” and that’s OK, but you’ll see some children thinking at higher level and making the connection of character traits too. You can always incorporate the Little Pot coloring sheet and have children glue paper seeds with words written on them of the things they wish to grow.

Based on Jan Brett’s Town Mouse Country Mouse

This book was one that I always read to my students to help them learn about the differences in rural and urban environments. It really is about the mice discovering that they need to learn to be happy with what they have and that the grass isn’t greener on the other side. The Bible also has a lot to say about us being discontented. And I’m ashamed to admit that I personally struggle a great deal with this concept. I think because I am a very determined and self driven person, I continually strive for more than I have. This trait has been a benefit to me at times because it is what drives me to achieve more and better myself. However, it has also been a fault within my relationship with God. Psalm 84:10 gives us an interesting perspective about the best place for us to live. In it David says he would rather spend one day being doorkeeper in the house of God than dwell in the house of the wicked for years. Basically he is saying it is better to just to be near God (by the door) than to live amongst the wicked or away form Him.

In this story, the country and city mice focus on the things that are wrong with the places they live. I tend to do the same at times. It seems easy some days to focus on the things that go wrong in my life. I assume that others have it better. If I could only trade places with them I’d have it better. If I had that opportunity, however, we all know that I’d see that their situation isn’t any better than mine. In fact, just like the mice, I’d quickly remember how good my life was. We tend not to appreciate things until we no longer have them. In Proverbs 30:15-16, we are warned about never having enough.

My struggle is in finding the balance between being content with what God has given me and is doing in my life, and then patiently waiting for Him to do more. I think the key is to measure success as God does and to be able to rest in Him. We are told to hunger and thirst for righteousness. That could indicate that a level of discontentment exists within the amount of righteousness we possess daily as Christians. Even Little Pot struggled with this as the potter emptied and filled it and it continually wanted more of something. I think the real issue is that we search for contentment in the wrong things. Even when it comes to God. We focus on the things God gives us instead of living in His righteousness. We are truly only content when we give what we have away and share with each other. Little Pot needed to learn that it wasn’t the things it would “hold” that would make it become useful. It was the ability to grow fruit and give it away.

The trouble the mice have in this story isn’t just that they find their current home unsatisfying. It is also that they are unable to cope in their new homes. If they had just taken the time to visit with one another and learn form each other, they could have had the best of both of their worlds. They would have found contentment not in what they got from each place but in the fact that they helped each other.

As long as I focus on me, I will remain discontented with life. If I focus on others, I will be closer to where God is. Even if I am only at the door of his awesomeness.
