Peace as a fruit of the Spirit. Advice from Maureen Miller and Little Pot.

How we can grow Peace as a fruit of the Spirit. Advice from Maureen Miller.

Peace as a fruit of the Spirit … Hmmmm. Do you ever wonder why peace made the list? Galatians 5:22-23 lists nine qualities of God that we produce when we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, and Peace is third on the list. It seems the world is constantly at war. So, how can we grow peace?

Little Pot is a vessel that the Potter grows His fruit through. We are created by a Potter, too, and His fruit should be growing through us also. That makes us fruit pots! I’ve asked our readers to share their testimonies about a time the Potter surprisingly grew the fruit of the Spirit through them. Maureen Miller is an author who writes about discovering our extraordinary God in the ordinary moments of the day. She is the perfect person to give a testimony of peace as a fruit of the Spirit. Get ready to hear her amazing story!

Waiting and Trusting

Maureen adopted a son. His name is Jacob, and he was born on August 18, 1999. His birth mother had expressed an understanding that holding him after his birth would make it hard for her to give him up. However, Maureen knew she shouldn’t worry. So, she trusted God and patiently waited for the day when Jacob would be born and she could bring him home.

The call came, and the day arrived. Maureen hurried to the Naval Hospital in San Diego. Her excitement was hard to contain. She was so eager to see Jacob for the first time. When she did, she found him nestled in his birth mom’s arms. But once again, Maureen trusted God and took Jacob home with her. Her world was filled with a newborn baby and all the little things she had purchased in preparation for his homecoming and life with her. Then, it happened. Only two days later, she was notified that the birth mom had changed her mind.

Sadness and Anger

Maureen had to take Jacob back, along with all his little belongings. She had to leave him behind in his birth mother’s apartment, unsure if she would ever see him again. The love and excitement of being Jacob’s mom were being overtaken by sadness and anger. She was at war with herself. Who would blame her for being mad at God? Instead, Maureen did not get angry. Instead, she managed to hug Jacob’s birth mom before kissing him Goodbye. Wait, she hugged her? How was that possible?

Peace as a fruit of the Spirit

It was possible because the Lord gave her peace during a heartbreaking time. God gently reminded Maureen of the time Abraham was asked to lay Isaac on the altar and trust Him for the outcome. She knew that she did not have the power to respond that way on her own. However, the Holy Spirit filled her with peace that surpassed all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Just like Abraham and Isaac

As it turned out, Jacob’s birth mom changed her mind again, and Maureen was able to get Jacob back a day later. That was over twenty-six years ago, and now Maureen still recalls a moment of peace beyond her ability. Likewise, whenever a discussion arises about how Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac on the altar, Maureen only smiles, drawing on her own experience of peace. This was a pivotal moment in her faith, for sure. Only by the presence of the Holy Spirit was she able to grow the fruit of peace amid heartbreak.

Growing Peace as a fruit of the Spirit

Just as Maureen discovered the peace within the fruit of the Spirit, Little PotTea Pot, Oil Lamp, and Small Jar discover that the Potter gives them peace amid trials. The Potter grows His fruit once we surrender and accept the circumstances that we cannot understand.

Maureen’s advice: Surrender to do what God asks and become a vessel where the Potter produces peace. Do you find yourself in a circumstance you cannot understand?
