a blog explaining Our Father who art in Heaven and the Lord's prayer

Our Father Who Art in Heaven, Have you met Little Pot’s Daddy?

“Our Father Who Art in Heaven” is how Jesus taught us to begin our prayers. In this infamous biblical text of Matthew 6:5-13, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray. He tells them to begin by addressing God as “Our Father who art in Heaven.” The original Greek uses the term Abba, Father here. Abba means “Daddy.”

Referring to God as Daddy was unusual because the term suggested a deep relationship. We might feel that term is not reverent enough. However, Jesus wanted his followers to see prayer as a conversation that exists within a close relationship with God. Therefore, He used a term representative of a loving parent and child.

In the stories of Little Pot and the other vessels, God is represented by a Potter. Let’s explore how the Potter acts toward the vessels in these stories. Consequently, we’ll determine how the Potter represents a God who is “Our Father who art in Heaven.” Likewise, we’ll learn a lot from Little Pot and see the love that holds us firmly in a father’s embrace. Get ready to be moved, inspired, and encouraged by the power of a daddy’s love.

Bearing the Name of Our Father in Heaven

Just as children typically bear their earthly Father’s last name, Christians bear Christ’s name. This carries a weight of responsibility and privilege. It signifies that we are part of a family, a spiritual lineage that connects us to God Himself. By calling God “Father,” we acknowledge His authority in our lives and dependence on His guidance and provision. This intimate relationship with God as our Father is a gift that brings both comfort and challenge. It reminds us of our identity as children of God and the call to live according to His will.

After we pray, “Our Father who art in Heaven,” we say, “Hallowed be Your Name.” We are honoring God’s name as Holy. Adressing Him as a Father and sharing His name, means we will live lives set apart and Holy, too.
